Recommended Resources:
Criteria for Recommendation |
 |
|
Books |
|
First of all, you should be aware that I certainly do
not agree with each and every book on this list. In fact, in addition to several well-established
scholarly texts, I have selected books which are highly
controversial. In other words: I recommend books, which I consider interesting -
either because they are full of facts and analyses, or because they are
highly opinionated, maybe even propagandistic. The readers should judge
for themselves.
(By they way - clicking on the book images gets you to Amazon.Com where
you may often find numerous reviews for each of the books.) |

Movies & Videos |
|
In this section I have selected
documentaries that highlight political, military, social, or economic
aspects in the development of the People's Republic of China. They may
be useful as background material for teaching on contemporary China. |

Travel Guides |
|
I have used some of these travel guides
myself during my extensive trips in China. Of course, travelers are an
extremely diverse crowd. They range from elderly tourists on guided
sightseeing tours to juvenile globetrotters who might be interested in
exploring some remote oasis in the Gobi desert. While some travelers
might be
interested in China's spectacular archeological sites and ethnic groups,
others may want to submerge in Shanghai's dining temples and nightlife
facilities. No traveling guide can satisfy everyone. The ranking
of guides, consequently, represents my personal preferences. However,
the top guides are certainly a good choice for most people, because they
cover a wide range of interests. |

|
Travel Maps |
|
I have only selected travel maps that are
fairly recent (not older than two or three years). |
 |
|
Fine Art Books |
|
Since beauty is in the eye of the observer,
I have not ranked any of my recommendations. |
 |
|
Doing Business |
|
My ranking of the "doing business guides" is
based on two criteria: First, I have selected only recent books.
Everything that is older than 10 years is probably worthless, since
economic conditions are changing so rapidly in China. Second, I have
given preference to "well known" names in the business world, such as
publications from "The Economist" or the "Harvard Business Review".
