According to the China Statistical Yearbook of 2003, average life expectancy at birth increased in all provinces of China between 1990 and 2000. This increase was unrelated to the provincial GDP level. Provinces with low GDP level in 2002 had both low (Gansu) and high (Qinghai) increase in average life expectancy at birth.
