Rural labor by economic sector and province, 2002 [absolute numbers]

Source: China Statistical Yearbook, 2003, Table 12-4, p.414.
Note: Number of laborers by sector according to main economic activity.

In the rural areas of Fujian, Guangdong, Jiangsu, and Zhejiang (and, of course, in the rural areas of Tianjin, Beijing and Shanghai) more than 40 percent of the labor force works in non-agricultural sectors. Please note that these percentages refer to the primary economic activity. If we take into account that many people in rural areas do part-time work in non-agricultural sectors, it is not unrealistic to assume that in half of China's provinces, some 40 percent of rural labor is outside of agriculture. This clearly indicates the declining relevance of agriculture for the rural economy in China. Many rural areas in China are no longer overwhelmingly dominated by agriculture but have a significant non-agricultural sector.
