Post-graduate Students and Students Studying Abroad, 1978-2004

Note: Please note that not all students in foreign countries are post-graduate students.
Source: National Bureau of Statistics of China (2005): China Statistical Yearbook, 2005. Beijing (China Statistics Press), Table 21-8

China is massively improving her human resource base. Between 1978 and 2004 the number of post-graduate students in China virtually "exploded" from just 870 students to almost 820 thousand. The number of students studying abroad increased from a mere 860 to almost 115 thousand in 2004. In relation to the number of enrolled graduate students, the highest percentages of students studying abroad was in 2002. Since then the number of Chinese students abroad has been declining (perhaps related to more restrictive policies in the United States).
