1994, December 14

Premier Li Peng officially announces the launching of the Three Gorges Dam project. By 2009, when the project is completed, 13 cities, 116 towns and townships, 1,711 villages, 17,160 ha of farmland, and 200 ancient tombs will be submerged (Tan, 2003). More than 1.4 million people will be resettled. If the project is completed, China will have the biggest, most expensive, and perhaps most dangerous hydroelectic dam ever bult.
