A report released in 1998 by the World Health Organization (WHO) concludes that of the ten most polluted cities in the world, seven can be found in China. The photo shows the serious air pollution that was typical for Beijing in the 1980s and 1990s. At least in Beijing, this situation has, however, improved considerably in recent years due to introduction of natural gas as energy source for heating and cooking.
