Major diplomatic crisis after US spy plane collides with Chinese fighter jet in mid-air and is forced to land.

The photo on the top shows Secretary of Defense Donald H. Rumsfeld (left) and General Huge Shelton, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (middle), who salutes Lieutnant Shane Osbourne. The photo was taken at Andrews Air Force Base, Maryland, USA. LT Osbourne was the pilot of the EP-3E AIRES II aircraft, which collided with a Chinese jet fighter over the China Sea.
The photo below depicts the Lockheed Martin Aeronautics Recovery Team using a crane to lift one of the four engines from the wing of the US Navy EP-3E AIRES aircraft, during the recovery operations at Lingshui Airfield, Hainan, China on June 28, 2001. Both photos were released to the public by the Defense Visual Information Center, Riverside, CA, USA (ID: DNSD0312085; ID: DNSD0312262)
