A team of researchers at the Institute of Computing Technology (ICT), part of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in Beijing develops the Godson-2 processor, which has great design-similarities to the MIPS R10000, introduced by MIPS Technologies in 1995. According to Tom Halfhill from MAXIMUMPC, Godson-2 is a powerful 64-bit processor at 0.18 micron fabrication technology (which is only two generations behind the current technological standard). Interestingly, Godson-2 is compatible with the Linux operating system - but not with MS-Windows! While AMD and Intel are out-competing each other, China is developing hardware that may threaten both hardware producers as well as Microsoft.
