Prominent elderly leaders protest in open letter against the Communist Party's secretive propaganda department.

2006, February 2

Former Communist Party officials denounce the recent closing of a prominent news journal. This protest against increasing censorship in Chinese news media is supported by Li Rui (Mao's secretary and biographer), Hu Jiwei (former editor of People's Daily), Zhu Houze (former leader of the party's propaganda office), and Li Pu (former head of the New China News Agency).
