Yahoo! has come under intense criticism for aiding in the 2004 arresting and imprisonment of civil rights activitst Shi Tao in China. During a concressional hearing, Michael Callahan, Yahoo's executive vice president applogised for failing to inform US lawmakers about Yahoo's role in that incident. Shi Tao was given a 10 year sentence for postings he made to a Yahoo! group. Chinese authorities asked Yahoo! for information to identify the man. Yahoo! is facing intense criticism for its involvement in the case because, according to US lawmakers, police in Beijing only found Mr Shi after Yahoo provided them with his e-mail account, IP address log-on history, and the contents of his e-mails.
