Hua Guofeng, who succeeded Mao Zedong for a short period in 1976 at the end of the Cultural Revolution, dies in Beijing aged 87. He was one of the "old guard" of revolutionary fighters, who had joined Mao's communist movement at the age of 15, fighting against Chiang Kai-shek's Natonalists. Hua was replaced formally by Deng Xiaoping in 1981, but had already lost the power struggle in 1978.
