Visit of US President Richard Nixon to China. Normalization between US and China begins.

1972, February 21

 

During his visit, President Nixon meets with Chairman Mao Zedong and holds talks with Premier Zhou Enlai. China and the U.S. issue a joint Communiqué in Shanghai (also known as the Shanghai Communiqué) on 28 February 1972. Concerning Taiwan, the U.S. side affirms the "One China Principle". The U.S. reaffirms their interest in a peaceful settlement of the Taiwan question.
