The rivalry between the USSR and China now affects every aspect their foreign policy.

1973

Relations between the USSR and China are characterized by deep distrust and hostility. Military preparations, particularly on the Soviet side of the common border have intensified considerably. The US Central Intelligence Agency estimates that a total of 43 Soviet combat divisions have been deployed in positions which indicate that they would be used in the early stages of any mayor conflict with China (CIA, 1973).
