The Chinese government initiates "Project Yangtze." Under this program, between 300 and 500 professors who are leading figures in their fields will receive a special subsidy of $12,000 per year on top of their normal salaries and welfare benefits. According to the Ministry of Education, the program "is aimed at easing the problem of a shortage of talented young scholars in the country." Ministry officials say that they hope the program will help increase the competitiveness of Chinese academia and create "a group of world-renowned masters."
