With economic reform and opening-up to the global economy, China could reduce the population in severe poverty from about 250 million in 1978 to less than 30 million in 2004. China's agricultural production also improved significantly. While the production of grain could barely meet the demand, production of meat, vegetables, fruits and pond-fish grew greatly. This diversification of agricultural production increased farmers' income and improved China's diet.
