This satellite image shows the muddy Yellow
River (top) at Jinan, the capital of Shandong Province. At the left side
you can see the highway, which connects Xuzhou (Anhui Province) with
Jinan and Liaocheng (Shandong Province), crossing the Yellow River. At
the lower-right the western districts of Jinan are visible. At the
bottom-center you can see Jinan airport.
In recent years downstream stretches of the Yellow River have frequently
fallen dry for significant periods due to over-consumption of water for
irrigation and industry in upstream provinces. However, due to the
extreme seasonality of the river flow and the significant sediment
deposits (which alleviate the river bed), flooding has also been
serious. If you zoom further into the image (+ control) you can see the
dams and dykes along the Yellow River which should protect settlements
and infrastructure from seasonal flooding. If you pan the image to the
right (> control) you will also see the Yellow River bridge of the
important railway connecting Xuzhou (Anhui Province) with Jinan
(Shandong Province) and Shuiazhuang (Hebei Province).
