This satellite image shows the Yellow
River (right) meandering through the Loess Plateau south of Yanan. This
plateau is a unique barren landscape situated between the North China
Plain and the Gobi Desert in the West. Its hills and mountains of fine
loess-clad are subject to extreme soil erosion. Through the numerous
tributaries a substantial proportion of this material eventually ends up
in the Yellow River, making it one of the most silt-loaded rivers in the
world.
